PowerPhotonic's Coherent Beam Combining Module solves key challenges of High Energy Lasers

PowerPhotonic’s new white paper on laser Coherent Beam Combining (CBC) gives an overview of how its new module solves, through the novel application of freeform monolithic array optics, the challenges of coherently combining high channel count fiber lasers for High Energy Laser (HEL) applications.

The result is a solution that delivers very high output power with high efficiency, with high brightness, and in a robust compact module that has a size, weight and power (SWaP) factor unattainable using conventional optics.

Emerging applications in defence, space, industry and big science require high beam quality (high brightness) beams greater than 150kW. The white paper outlines how PowerPhotonic array optics spatially combine light from a fiber input array into first gaussian, then super-gaussian, then hexagonally tiled beamlets into a single high power output beam.

Dr. Stephen Kidd, Head of Sales and Marketing at PowerPhotonic, explains, “PowerPhotonic’s coherent beam combining module brings an extremely compact, highly efficient (more than 70%) and rugged solution to the challenge of coherently combining light into a high beam quality output beam with power in excess of 150kW. While the module itself is both small and efficient, those efficiency gains translate to major gains to the overall architecture of High Energy Laser (HEL) systems and their associated infrastructure.”
