The versatility of freeform optics – September’s exhibition coverage.

During its busy September exhibition schedule, PowerPhotonic demonstrated the versatility, performance and efficiency benefits that its fully freeform optics bring to a wide range of markets. SPIE Sensors and Imaging was focused on environmental, homeland security, defence, and counterterrorism applications. The PLI Conference, organised by Club Laser et Procédés, was for industrial innovation, and finally the Science and Technology Facilities Council exhibition encouraged innovation, through industrial academic research collaborations. PowerPhotonic showcased a range of optical solutions from its product portfolio at the exhibitions.

  1. Industrial Solutions

Industrial solutions profiled were the Deposited Energy Flat Top (DEFT) beam shaper and the Single Mode Ring Generator. The DEFT beam shaper improves additive manufacturing by creating a smaller, laser melt-spot of uniform energy distribution as the laser moves. It enables more detailed components to be produced with minimal, postproduction finishing required. The Single Mode Ring Generator also improves additive manufacturing, as well as laser micro machining and ultrafast material processing, in this case by producing a ring-shaped melt spot, with reduced heat overspill.

  1. High-power solutions

The high-power solution displayed was the Coherent Beam Combiner (CBC) assembly module, combining light from multiple fiber lasers into a single, coherent, high-power beam.

  1. Aberration correctors

PowerPhotonic showcased the Aberration Corrector optic, which can simultaneously correct multiple laser system defects such as pointing, defocus, astigmatism and coma. It restores beam quality simply and at low cost, benefiting a wide range of applications.

  1. Online design platform

LightForge™, the online design platform, enables engineers to produce custom optics, reducing engineering time, NRE costs and streamlining production. It can reduce component lead times to as little as two weeks in some cases.
