PowerPhotonic is showcasing the Monolithic Fast-Axis Collimator Array (MFACA); an ultra-high-power, laser diode collimation optic and performance enhancing, Phaseplate Corrector, at SPIE Photonics West, in January.

PowerPhotonics’ MFACA enables the collimation of high-density, laser diode stacks. It comprises a monolithic array of fast axis collimation optics, within a single optical element. It is made using PowerPhotonic’s proprietary, touch-free, laser machining process, which delivers high brightness with minimal loss. Most typically, each MFACA collimates arrays of 50 – 60 laser diode bars, with bar-to-bar pitches ranging from 1mm down to 350µm; the tightest pitch in the industry. Multiple MFACAs can be stacked in an assembly, with high-volume solutions, such as for laser inertial fusion (LIF), requiring thousands of laser diode assemblies.

For highly specialist MFACA applications, PowerPhotonic can produce each bar of the array with different optical characteristics, optimising performance still further.

Key Benefits –

  • Ability to collimate stacks with bar-to-bar pitches down to 350µm
  • Low loss, high power handling
  • Monolithic collimation arrays
  • Customised pitch matching available
  • Ease of alignment through single element

PowerPhotonic can also wipe the smile off your MFACA!

PowerPhotonic also produces a PhasePlate corrector, or ‘Smile Corrector’, for its MFACA’s. This optic corrects the wavefront of the MFACA from a curve to a flat line of optimal performance. This compensates for variance errors inherent in high-density, laser diode stacks, such as smile, spacing and tilt. This also allows greater mechanical tolerances within assemblies, increasing yield and saving costs.

In addition to laser inertial fusion, MFACA applications include Pulsed Laser Directed Energy Weapons (pulsed LDEW) and advanced medical sources.
