PowerPhotonic’s Deposited Energy Flat Top (DEFT) freeform beam shaper optimises energy distribution in the additive manufacturing (AM) process. Typically, a laser with a high quality, single mode Gaussian output beam is required in powder-bed laser additive manufacturing as it creates the smallest spot possible, allowing very fine 3D features to be made. However, when a Gaussian profile spot is scanned across the powder-bed, the deposited energy has a Gaussian profile perpendicular to the scan direction: far from ideal from the perspective of laser sintering the fine powder of the AM machine. The optimum AM process is likely to require a near uniform heat input to the powder-bed perpendicular to the scan direction. This requires a complex intensity profile – but one which the DEFT beam shaper is able to produce.
