Fusion energy offers the potential for virtually limitless, carbon-free power – without greenhouse gas emissions, long-lived radioactive waste, or the risk of runaway reactions.
One of the most promising approaches is Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). This method compresses a tiny fuel pellet using some of the world’s most powerful laser systems, releasing the enormous energy stored within hydrogen nuclei.
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) achieved a historic milestone on December 5, 2022, when it produced the first controlled fusion reaction in history that generated more energy than the laser energy delivered to the target — a state called fusion ignition. Since then, the race has been on to commercialize the technology pioneered at NIF and move towards the development of a power station powered by fusion energy.
Where PowerPhotonic Fits
Achieving fusion requires extreme precision. Hundreds of high-energy laser beams must converge on a target within nanoseconds – any inefficiency reduces performance and increases cost.
PowerPhotonic enables this precision.
Our freeform micro-optics shape, homogenize and direct laser energy exactly where it is needed—maximizing efficiency while withstanding extreme optical intensities. Few optical technologies can operate under these conditions.
Our Role in Fusion Systems
In future fusion systems, diode laser arrays will be used to generate vast amounts of optical power. PowerPhotonic components condition this raw output, precisely tailoring it for downstream amplification. Without this control, energy is dispersed and wasted – with it, systems are free to operate at peak efficiency.
Commercial Advantages
Design Flexibility
Freeform optics enable wider tolerances in diode stacks, reducing cost, improving yield, and strengthening supply chain resilience.
High-Power Performance
Laser-processed fused silica delivers exceptional optical quality, durability, and resistance to thermal and optical damage.
Proven Scalability
Our technology is already deployed in industrial and directed-energy markets, making us a qualified, production-ready partner for fusion developers. As fusion scales, millions of precision optical elements will be required. PowerPhotonic is positioned to become a key supplier at the heart of the global fusion supply chain.
